Adding WS2012 R2 Essentials to WS2012 R2 Standard

As we informed you yesterday Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials can now be installed from Windows Server R2 Standard or Datacenter by adding it as a role (feature).

Fellow MVP Daniel Santos has written a tutorial (in Portuguese) on how to accomplish this which takes us through the necessary steps. Thanks to Google Translate here is the English translation.

Windows Server R2 Essentials Preview Available

Microsoft have posted the preview versions of Windows Server 2012 R2 and more importantly to us Windows Server R2 Essentials.

They are available for public download at the TechNet Evaluation Center as well as on TechNet and MSDN for the relevant subscribers.

Windows Server Essentials is now available in two forms:

  1. In the Standard and Datacenter editions of Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview, installing the Windows Server Essentials Experience role on Windows Server 2012 R2 Preview provides you all the features and functionalities (such as dashboard, client computer backups, and Remote Web Access) of Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Preview without the locks and limits imposed on it. More information here.
  2. Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Preview as a core Windows Server edition. As a part of your installation process, you can now opt to install Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials Preview as a virtual machine using a wizard.

Add-In: StableBit DrivePool v1.3.2.7556 Release Final

StableBit DrivePool 1.3.2.7556 Release Final is available for WHS2011, SBS 2011 Essentials and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials. Since the last release this release adds NFS server support as well as fixes.

Here’s the full change log:

  • Made the error message more clear when re-indexing is not working due to the Windows Search service being disabled.
  • Added FolderSizes_Disable to disable folder size queries in the Dashboard for slower servers.
    Folder sizes are only queried while the Dashboard is open.
  • [D] Fixed crash when removing the last disk in the pool.
  • [D] Fixed rare crash in pool part find files, as reported.

An update for users of the beta version of StableBit DrivePool for WS2012 Essentials, with a few fixes based on user feedback:

  • Fixed reboot required dialog on upgrade.
  • [D] Fixed crash in FastIoQueryNetworkOpenInfo, as reported.
  • Enabled CoveFs_ReportAsNtfs by default. There seem to be many applications that assume FAT32 limitations if the file system does not report as "NTFS", regardless of what the actual reported capabilities are.

Lights-Out version 1.5.4 has been released today and now supports a third platform, Windows 7/8 and Standard Windows Server.

  • Lights-Out client can now be operated in parallel with another Lights-Out server installation
  • In place license upgrade (discount code)
  • New 30 day evaluation period
  • Client software can wake additional devices (registry key required)
  • Improved backup detection on server if backup is compacting VHD files
