I use my WHS as the endpoint to a VPN and proxy server using FreeProxy as I live in the UK (and pay for a TV licence) but work in Germany, so it is useful to be able to watch streamed TV from the BBC. I also use it as a central area for my family to share information with me, or even scan the day’s post and leave it on the Mail share.

  2. Leod says:

My Home Server is the centre of my home network. I use it to stream all my media to devices within my home and to my laptop when I’m away. I also use it for remote access to my data and sharing photo albums with friends and family. Couldn’t do with out it.

  3. Sean says:

I serve up a large music collection with iTunes installed on the WHS connecting to an Airport Express downstairs hooked up to a receiver wired to speakers throughout the kitchen, dining room and living room, and driven by the Remote app on an iPod Touch. (Whew!) I also store all our families important documents which have been scanned and PDF’d.

  4. Carl Tyler says:

I use my Windows Home Server as my Media Server for my PS3 and Tivo, and also as a means of getting access to the machines in my house when I am traveling.

  5. Lee Ladisky says:

I use my WHS for Media Serving and Document storage.

  6. Ben says:

I used it as a media centre. Run powerDVD to watch blu-ray films. Have xbmc for the rest. It also serves as a media encoder (Handbrake) utilising all that spare CPU time as it’s on 24/7

  7. Don says:

    Centralized storage pool.
    Media streaming.

  8. Magnus says:

I use WHS for accessing my files everywhere, and stream media using SageTV for WHS.

  9. John L says:

I use WHS to store downloaded software updates and as my central media server (videos, music and pics).

  10. Dale says:

I use it for central file storage for pictures & videos and for remote access to systems on my home network.

  11. Michiel says:

I use WHS to manage and secure all the family pictures with my three beautiful kids. And to stream all my movies and music.

  12. Steve says:

media streaming and central file storage

  13. tivoboy says:

I use it as a media and itunes server, and definitely to share the 1000s of pictures I take with others.

  14. JohnBick says:

I use my MSS to stream music and photos and to monitor my home security.

  15. Dustin says:

I would say that torrent downloads and FTP are the two things I most use WHS for.

I use WHS for quite a few things. I use it as a way for me to remote desktop to it and my networked PC’s from work or school. When I’m helping friends with their PC issues I frequently log in remotely so that I can pull the necessary diagnostics and/or files off to repair their PC. I also us it in conjunction with SyncToy so that all of my media files stay up today with the changes that I make on the road. I also use it with Dropbox as a way for me to start torrent DL’s remotely. I have set up Utorrent to monitor my Dropbox folder so that it automatically starts downloading. I also use WHS as a way for me to share files with friends by giving them web access to it. In addition, I use WHS to stream all of my media to my PC’s and TV so that all of my media is centrally stored and accessible anywhere. Of course, I use WHS as a way to backup my PC’s. I find it particularly useful with Windows 7: I have been trying a lot of hardware and software configurations that often times causes freezing and/or malfunctions and I like being able to restore back to the most recent stable set up.

  16. Hurmoth says:

I use WHS for a central location to all my data and I also use it for WSUS.

  17. WHS Fan says:

I use WHS for two main things (in addition to backup):
    1) Remote access to shared documents
    2) Centralized repository of media and documents

  18. Tim Cooper says:

Would love to win this…as with the others, need some off-site storage to back up the WHS backup. Backups for the backups…love it!

  19. Colin says:

    1. Storing documents so I can work from my desktop or laptop.
    2. Streaming music around the house.
