Windows Home Server Price Drop
Beginning tomorrow, November 1, Microsoft introduces a 30% price reduction on the Windows Home Server software after a successful year on the market. Although there is no recommended price set by Microsoft, this will bring the price down to approximately $120 in the US and £80 in the UK – A great saving.
Microsoft say that they are reducing the price of Windows Home Server which comes in a System Builder version to provide additional value to the system builder community and further promote Microsoft’s new home server category.
During its first year in the market, Windows Home Server has been embraced by customers in over 50 countries and the list of hardware partners continues to grow with third-party software developers having released or have announced more than 60 Add-in programs extending the capabilities of Windows Home Server.

I’ll have to see what Newegg . com will drop it to after MS institutes this price reduction. I’m going to need to build a second WHS machine shortly…..

I suspect the price drop is a precursor to a launch of Version 2 of WHS. With the forthcoming 64 bit WHS software, sales of older version 32 bit stock will be very slow, if not dead. So, good business sense would dictate that now is the time to move old version inventory off the shelves so the vendors don’t get stuck with it.
I, for one, am anxiously waiting for the new 64 bit Version 2, with all of its touted improvements. We shall see!
This is good news. This will make a difference for the roll out of WHSs to my customers’ low income properties and computer labs. Typically low income properties where free Internet is provided have a third of their units using computers and providing WHSs on donated equipment for every ten computers can help them avoid catastrophic expenses if something goes wrong. Non-profits that do not use a WHS for their business network now have no excuse. Low priced adequate servers are now very muich available on Ebay for use as WHSs.
