Home Server Backups Fail when Using Norton Ghost

Norton Ghost is an imaging program similar to Acronis True Image which creates full system and file backups by cloning the hard drive.

And why is this relevant for Windows Home Server users?

Well it seems that having Norton Ghost 15 installed on Windows 7 (or Ghost 14 on XP or Vista) will cause the Home Server backups to fail. There is a solution available which involves removing the Symantec VSS Provider key from the Windows Registry, which will allow Ghost 15 to continue to work as well as the WHS backup, although you may have to reboot between using both programs.

The steps necessary are available here.

I haven’t found this to be true. I backup a Win7 32 and 64 bit system using whs 1 & 2 and have no problems with the backup or restore od either machine. In fact restoring the 64 bit from whs 2 is insanely fast,

Maybe lots of people have no problem with both Ghost and WHS. The conflict seems to manifest itself primarily when these three programs are installed: (1)WHS, (2) Norton Ghost 14 or 15, and (3) NIS 2009, NIS 2010, Norton 360, or Comcast Norton Security Suite. Symantec said on their forum in June 2009 that they reproduced the problem but didn’t have a fix (and didn’t fix it with Ghost 15 since then).

If WHS 2 resolves the conflict altogether, wonderful!
