Thanks for the article on how it takes WHS 16 steps to print when away from home. I thought WHS was suppose to be easy, simple and uncomplicated, right?

16 step which are dependent upon the additional criteria,

    > remote access enabled
    > port 80 or port 443 is open
    > must also have a DOMAIN NAME

    > have the printer connected to the MediaSmart server and shared on the network

    > set permissions properly

    > some multifunction printers will not be fully functional

and you could screw up your server if you don’t follow this tutorial…

Sounds easy for your typical home user, right? Anyone able to mange this doesn’t need WHS, they can certainly be able to work with the full version and take advantage of the additional performance enhancements.

  2. Eric says:

The tutorial is not that difficult and the warnings are there merely to keep folks from whining if they can’t get it working. The WHS is designed for remote access and HP and MS both include free domains.

One user created a “printer user” that had no access to shared folders or remote access, but could print. This is a safe way to do this.

Overall, its a simple tutorial for those technical enough to do this and it works great!

  3. Ron says:

Isn’t WHS suppose to be for home users? Requiring those to be technical enough might as well use Linux for FREE then.

WHS = Technical Enough, but “dumb down” edition, sounds confusing here or rather which is it?

Windows Server 2003 reduced to WHS console, that requires technical experts to use “dumb down” versions?

I think it’s safe to say, most of the typical home users are going to expect an easier method of printing online than to follow a “16 step technical enough” suppose to be simple home server for the family members, including the grandparents.

It takes less than 16 steps to install Linux folks!

  4. Hi Guys,
This site is designed for WHS users both new and experienced and as such will cover tutorials that will allow users to do things with Home Server that it was NOT designed for. The guides are there for your information.

I posted an easy way to install a network ready printer on your server.
It doesn’t take away from this other article its just in addition if your printer can’t be plugged in directly to your router via usb.

  6. Hi JediJah,
    Thanks for your tutorial.
