  3. Martin says:

🙁 Can’t say that I am that happy about diskeeper for WHS, as my WHS do not work anymore after the first try in running a defragmentation og the C: drive.

  4. Hi Martin,

That dosen’t sound good at all. In what way is it not working anymore?

  5. Martin says:

    Hi Philip,

After the defragmentation of C: my WHS can’t boot. Comes up with a “missiing hal.dll file” Now I am trying to reinstall WHS in hope that all my files will still be there! Although I do have a backup of 85% of it all (250GB) the last 15% is some photos from the last hollieday and so on 🙁

  6. Hi Martin,

Thanks for the update. I shall speak to my contact at Diskeeper for you and see what they have to say.

  7. TheJudge says:

I installed it three days ago and all is well. I did a manual defrag on all drives and configured the Master Table File (MTF). I got the MTF to configure as Diskeeper instructed for C and D, but not the Data (mounted) drive. Hmmm

Any hoo.. the server does run faster as it was 40% fragmented on all drives!

No probs here…so far. I recomend everyone try it.

Martin, hope all is well with your reinstall!

  8. Hi TheJudge,

    Thanks for your comment.

  9. Hi Martin,

I have spoken to Diskeeper for you, below is their responce:

“Sorry to hear about the problem that one of your readers is experiencing. Usually anytime a HAL can’t be read, missing, or is corrupt it is due to a hardware failure or a motherboard was changed.

From a disk point of view…Diskeeper tends to increase disk activity, and just by running, it can make weak points in the system break. In this case, he may have some disk error. Before reinstalling or repairing Windows Home Server, he might want to take the disk out of this system and mount it into a different system to copy any important files (family photos, etc.) and then run CHKDSK/R on the volume. If no errors are detected, then attempt to restore WHS from the CD/DVD.”

I hope this will help you, and I must say Diskeeper were very fast and efficient in responding.

    Hi Philip,

First of all, thanks a lot for taking your time to write to Diskeeper about my problem 🙂

So far I have not been able to restore/reinstall my WHS, I have not yet tried the “New install” option as I want to try a save all my data. I think Diskeeper might be right about the disk error and I am going to do the CHKDSK /R as soon as I have time.

But… one thing I don’t understand is (maybe someone here has a clue ?) every time I try to reinstall my WHS, when I get to the point of the “End-user License Agreement” page and push “next” nothing more happens!! I can still move the mouse around and activate/deactive my num-lock. So the server is still “alive” somehow, but the installation of WHS stops!! Even in safe mode.

Any idea what to do ?

Again.. Thanks alot for you help and support 🙂

  11. Hi Martin,

Wow that is a weird one. It could be the media has become corrupt and you may need to re-burn it. I have known “things” to happen like this with a corrupt CD/DVD. My post Avoid Setup Errors explains more.

  12. TheJudge says:

    Update,

I was able to get the D (mounted) drive to config the MTF and do a boot defragment.

Also, on my 1.33 ghz AMD machine….before having Diskeeper installed…I had 30%-40% fragmentation. Demigrator was constantly running and balancing files around. Now since running Diskeeper, Demigrator might not run for days on WHS! Now it seems to run only if I add files to the system. Which is great because Demigrator is a resource hog on my slower machine. Sort of a side benefit…I guess.

  13. Hi TheJudge,

Glad to hear that Diskeeper is working well for you.

  14. Damian says:

Anyone know the suggested run conventions for Diskeeper on WHS? Is it ok to run on all volumes?
