Remote Desktop for Mac available for WHS

I would like to bring to your attention an RDC Client for the Mac. It enables you to to remote desktop into your server from a MAC machine, and it works really well. As their blurb states:

Remote Desktop Connection Client lets you connect to a Microsoft Windows-based computer and work with programs and files on that computer from your Macintosh computer.

Download the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection Client for Mac 2.0 (Beta 2) from here.

  1. FYI, to get this to work w/ beta 2 I had to change WHS’s RDP security protocol from “Negotiated” to “RDP Security Layer”. The problem is mentioned in RDP b2’s Readme file, but they don’t give explicit instructions for making the change.

    Instructions
    —————
    1. On your WHS go to Start -> All Programs -> Administrative Tools->Terminal Services Configuration…
    2. Double-click on Terminal Services->Connections->RDP-Tcp…
    3. Select the General tab, and change Security Layer to “RDP Security Layer”.

    NOTE: I have no clue if this messes with any of the WHS apps, which seem todepend quite a bit on RDP. I just got it working, and haven’t done much testing. If I run into any problems then I’ll respond to this comment again.

  2. Thanks Andrew Wheeler for the details.

  3. Quick update.

    My XP RDC clients now seem to irregularly drop the connection w/ my WHS due to some sort of encryption/CRC burp (I didn’t write down the exact error message.) It doesn’t happen too often, so I still have everything configured as I mentioned above, and I just reconnect whenever whenever the connection drops. But I’ll probably end up going back to “Negotiated” security protocol and just wait for MS to fix the issues w/ RDC for the Mac.

    Alternatively, I’m running XP on my mac via VMWare Fusion. It may be easier to just use the XP RDC client instead of the Mac RDC client – at least until the bugs are worked out.

    Do I need to change this setting for beta 3? Thanks.
