WHS @ Microsoft's OEM Partner Center

For those of you that are registered with Microsoft’s OEM Partner Center, they now have a page up dedicated to Windows Home Server with a link back to us stating:

Phill Churchill’s Blog. A non-Microsoft external blog where you can access information about installation, issues, configuration, and more.

Thanks guys. They also have a “Windows Home Server Overview” PDF document available for download (right click and save target as), and they state that sales and technical training are coming to the page soon.

NOTE: You must be registered to view or download from the OEM Partner Center. To do so you must build and sell new PCs or servers, which qualifies you as a system builder. Whether you build one system a month or more then you can join the program for free.

The Books are Flowing

We have already posted details on four upcoming Windows Home Server books (here, here and here) and today we have details on another two. “Microsoft Windows Home Server Unleashed” and “Windows Home Server Bible”.

“Microsoft Windows Home Server Unleashed” by Paul McFedries will be available from Sep/Oct 2007.

WHSUnleashed

Published by Sams this $50 (£36) paperback should be one to watch out for as the “Unleashed” series of books is very good.

Next up the “Windows Home Server Bible” by Hank Carbeck published by renowned publishers John Wiley & Sons Inc, this Bible series volume should be available 7 March 2008 for £23.

Home Server Banner Mystery

Colin Walker from the tech blog Randomelements has posted details of the mysterious “Home Server Banner” link that appears in the Internet Explorer view toolbars menu.

More details from Randomelements.

UPDATE: After reading through Colin’s site I noticed on one of his posts that it displayed a weather gadget that displayed the temperature for Gravesend, GBR. Wow! a fellow Windows Home Server geek, just like me from the same town here in Kent in the UK. As Colin states it really is a small world.

Add-in AutoExit 2008 for Windows Home Server

Terry from We Got Served has published information about a new add-in which allows you to shut down and reboot machines in your home network from within the WHS console.
The add-in AutoExit 2008 allows you to execute these actions per machine or for all machines. You can also send messages to the different machines, configuring the timeout/message plus there is even support for opening a Remote Desktop session to the remote machines and also to the server. Statistics are kept of all actions, so that a detailed trace can be viewed when certain actions were executed.

TiVo Publisher add-in for WHS

For those of you with a TiVo machine (USA), the TiVo Publisher Add-In for Windows Home Server installs as a service, which makes your WHS music, photo, and video shares browsable from any TiVo that supports home networking.

TiVoWHSAddIn

Well done to developer Rob. I am sure those of you with a TiVo and a Windows Home Server combination will be happy with this add-in.

Outlook Webmail Add-in for Windows Home Server

Brian Peek over at Coding4Fun has posted an article on how to create an add-in for WHS that will allow users to view their Outlook mail from a web browser. If you have not got the coding knowledge or the 2-3 hours free to complete the project Brain has also posted the sample code for download so you can use the application straight away.

Outlook Webmail

NOTE: This application will only work with Microsoft Outlook.  It will not work with Outlook Express, Windows Mail, or any other mail client.

WHS History Lesson

Pay attention please else you can sit at the back of the class!

Now that we have Windows Home server a short time away from being available shrink wrapped, I thought that a brief history of our beloved home server would be in order.

  • 1999                 First thought paper written about a home server product by Charlie Kindel.
  • February 2004  Quattro Project begins.
  • April 2005         Product group formed.
  • January 2007    Microsoft previews Windows Home Server at CES 2007.
  • February 2007   Beta 2 begins.
  • April 2007         CTP (Community Technology Preview) test build released.
  • April 2007         Software development kit (SDK) available.
  • May 2007          Windows Home Server demonstrated at WinHEC 2007.
  • June 2007         Release Candidate (RC) goes live.
  • July 2007           Product Released To Manufacturing (RTM).
  • August 2007      Officially available.

livenode.com Transferred to HomeServer.com Domain for FREE

In the beta builds of WHS Microsoft used 2 test domains for their Dynamic DNS service:

  • livenode.com
  • livenode2.com

Beta testers could get a personalized domain name (e.g. MyName.livenode.com) for remote access to their home server while away from home.

If as a beta tester you registered a personalized domain name with either livenode.com or livenode2.com prior to August 3, 2007, that domain name will get transferred over to HomeServer.com when you install the RTM (Release to Manufacturing) version of Windows Home Server.

Any future domain names registered with either the Release Candidate (RC) build or the Windows Home Server 120-day Evaluation edition will be registered as livenode.com domains and will not be transferred over to HomeServer.com.  All new domain names registered with the RTM version of Windows Home Server will be using HomeServer.com starting today (8 August 2007).

As the Windows Home Server Team has added: This was a one time transfer as a “THANKS” to all of our early testers. …Your feedback through the Connect site, Community Forums and Newsgroup throughout the testing of Windows Home Server has been fantastic.
