Paul Roberts had some problems restoring a Sony Vaio F Series laptop with version 1 of Windows Home Server.

Although the restore process did install the proper drivers for the 64bit Realtek PCIe GBE controller and the hard drive it could not find his WHS via the network and even opening up the Console and pulling the WHS Restore files out of a recent back up did not work.

Upon investigation Paul found out that Sony, Alien Ware and anything else using a newer Realtek PCIe network card would have this issue.

PC Doc on his blog "The Doc’s World" has an article on using Air Video to stream content from your Home server.

In his article the PC Doc explains how to setup the application on a iPhone, iPad or iTouch and explains how to install and setup the software on Windows Home Server too.

Air Video is an application for iPhone/iPad/iTouch that works extremely well for streaming directly from a local computer/server, and stream to your portable device. The PC/MAC is used for real-time transcoding and basically pulls content from your computer/server shares and streams it across your house as well as through the broadband connection. If the file is in an MP4 format, it will stream natively without the need to convert the format, although based on your network speed, still may transcode to lower the resolution. If however you have an MKV file for example, it will transcode the format real time as it streams it to you over your network or the internet.

Sean Daniel is looking at more ways to take advantage of his low-powered Home Server to do more for him as an *always* on device. And over the holiday period had to print boarding passes prior to leaving for the airport:

It was frustrating to have to take out the laptop when the iPad is just right there. But without a compatible AirPrint printer, you can’t print from the iPad…Or can’t you?

By using a Windows (or Mac OS) application that installs on your computer that shares almost any printer connected to the computer, to the AirPrint service, Sean was able to get this setup.

In his write up Sean goes through the setup procedure including opening a port on your router and enabling Multicast which you can read all about here.

In his post he explains how to set up the router and subdomain:

“It was not hard to get Windows Home Server configured for web when it is behind two routers. You first let WHS configure web router and subdomain.”

It may be useful for some, if so you can find it here.

Home Server has been Sean’s personal cloud storage location since 2007, just chugging away. The one draw back is that there is only one account “Administrator” that has total access to the server. this obviously isn’t good computing practice, so Sean shows us how to create a working account that you can have do things for you.

WeGotServed’s 2 page guide explains how to get your Mac backing up again to Windows Home Server (v1):

…Mac OS X Lion will no longer backup to a Windows (SMB/CIFS) shared folder when using Time Machine. Only HFS+J formatted USB drives and AFP shares will work. Luckily, an open source package exists that provides support for AFP and Bonjour on Windows Home Server, called Netatalk. Though it was originally developed for Unix systems, it is possible to load a very small Linux virtual machine (<384MB of space) which will host Netatalk, and be configured to run at startup like a service…

This is just a quick post to say that iCloud works fine on Windows Home Server 2011. Thought Apple don’t list Windows Server 2008 R2 or WHS 2011 as a compatible product I’ve installed iCloud without any issues on my Windows Home Server and it’s been happily downloading photos sent by an iPhone 4 over the past week.

Simply logon to your Windows Home Server via RDP and go to http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1455 and download the iCloud Control Panel for Windows. Install the application as normal but due to the fact it registers a new component with the Windows control panel you will need to reboot before you can access the system control panel. Don’t install iCloud unless you can reboot right away or live without the control panel until your server is rebooted.

After you have rebooted you can go to the Windows control panel and find the new iCloud control panel applet:

You will be prompted to enter in your Apple ID and password and if you don’t have an iCloud account there will be some words to agree to as is the norm these days. Once you have completed the sign in/up process you’ll see the main control panel. From here I only selected to enable the Photo Stream option. I don’t have Outlook installed nor do I want to sync my Bookmarks with Internet Explorer:

Select the “Options…” button and then change the Download Folder to a Shared Folder on your Windows Home Server. I decided to make a new sub-folder in my Pictures share and left the Upload folder at default as I don’t plan to upload photos from the server to iCloud. Do note that if you set this folder to a location where you will save photos on your network then you will potentially fill up your iCloud quota quite quickly:

That’s it! A very straight-forward way to sync all your photos from mobile Apple devices to your Windows Home Server. In testing we found the latency from taking a photo on the iPhone to be able to retrieve it from the remote access website to be well under a minute.

Using Windows Home Server with CrashPlan?

No, then you should do as it is presently one of the cheapest and best solutions for backing up Windows Home Server to the cloud.

Although CrashPlan does not have a dedicated add-in for Home Server users it is very easy to set up:

For v1 users just follow this guide.

WHS 2011 users just need to choose the drive letters to backup (since WHS 2011 does not use Drive Extender there will not be any corruption issues with using this method)

Finally do NOT use v1 of WHS as a backup destination for CrashPlan as this could cause file corruption issues.

Using an external USB DVD player, a copy of DVDFAB DVD Copy and ExpressRip, a batch file and the scheduler on Home Server is all that is required to get this set up and working automatically.

In his guide Dave takes us through the Windows Home Server 2011 dashboard “Home” tab teaching us how to get updates for other Microsoft products, how to set up server backup and Remote Web Access, how to set options for sharing, configure media settings and along the way we are taught about centralized storage.

If you are planning to install version 1 of Windows Home Server on a HP ProLiant MicroServer then DO NOT use one of the modded bios that speeds up the ODD port (CD Drive Bay) before installation.

Due to the ACHI/IDE mode of the SATA controller you have to change in and out of IDE mode to complete the installation which will NOT work if you mod the bios beforehand as you will get a blue screen error message after the first boot.

If you are currently using a modded bios and want to install v1, then first revert back to the latest original HP bios, install version 1 of WHS, get everything setup and then you can re-flash a modded bios to speed up the ODD port if you are planning to use it to connect a hard drive.

For a great guide on installing version 1 of Windows Home Server on the HP ProLiant MicroServer, then follow Stanza’s post here on the Australian Overclockers Forum

Microsoft have published a TechNet Wiki article on three media streaming issues which affect both WHS 2011 and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials users.

The first workaround is for the repeat function not working when playing single music/video on the RWA page

Secondly, after moving video/photos/music files to a different folder that is out of the default media folder, the files will still be displayed on media streaming gadget on RWA and Windows Media Player.

And finally a workaround for music album art and tags getting overwritten.

The background, symptoms, causes and solutions to these 3 known issues can be found here.
