Add-In: Home Server SMART 2012 v2.2.5.2

Matt Sawyer the developer behind Home Server SMART has coded the last few SSDs into the final beta of Home Server SMART 2012.

Home Server SMART 2012 is an add-in for Windows Home Server 2011, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials.

BitLocker_with_all_disks

The free add-in automatically and continuously monitors the health of most of your hard disks attached to WHS. Home Server SMART examines the S.M.A.R.T. data exposed by your disks and determines the health of the disk. If problems are detected, Home Server SMART informs you which attribute(s) are critical or problematic, and it presents a summary of problems found. If the problems are serious, Home Server SMART will make a recommendation to you that you replace the disk.

I’ve just learned (the hard way after buying WHS and trying for days to troubleshoot) that Windows Home Server 2011 does not support backing up computers with a EFI/UEFI motherboard. Also it will not back up hard drives with a GUID partition – sometimes it does not back up any hard drive if there is a GPT hard drive in the mix. Making it worse, obviously any hard drive over 2TB must be partitioned GUID.

I was wondering if you could draw some attention to this issue as more and more computers are now being sold with EFI motherboards and they will not work with WHS. Also computers with drives larger than 2TB. It seems like it will potentially be a huge deal in the near future.

I have gotten nowhere with this issue and am pretty frustrated since I had a fine Amahi server and decided to make the painful switch (moving all my data from JBOD to normal disks to WHS was not fun).

    Thanks for your time.

I’ve just spent several hours researching this same issue, and finally found some useful information on this site.

    http://connecteddigitalworld.com/2011/02/27/gpt-and-mbr-disk-partitioning-a-supplement-to-byob-33/

The amount of misguided information regarding this problem is significant. So raising awareness on sites like this are critical.

In my case, I formatted a 76GB HDD on a new EFI capable mobo, not realizing that the default formatting would create a GPT boot drive with an EFI partition versus the MBR partition. So I’m not even using a 3TB drive, and I have this problem. I’m now looking at Acronis Drive Director and other similar products to repartition the drive to avoid reinstalling everything from scratch.

    Thanks!
