guys,
I’m old enough to remember back in the days of 386 and 486 microprocessors when defragmenting your 10 MB hard disk was an essential part of getting every last bit of speed out of the machine.
4 of 5 years ago years ago it was still a mandatory requirement to get some decent response out of programmes such as voice recognition software Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
The latest processors and buses might have improved PC performance, products such as Perfectdisk still improve disk performance and extend their life.

And I’m really annoyed that I didn’t upgrade my existing copy of Windows Home Server PerfectDisk a few weeks ago when the pre-release 20% offers were getting around!

I defrag to speed up everything in general working with large files to be specific. The saved space helps too.

I stream Videofiles from my Server (Full HD) over my 300 MBit Wlan. I found out, that defragmenting the files make it less stuttering.
I use version 10 atm and would like to try out the new version

Why defrag?
Every time you use your computer, changes occur on the hard drive. Eventually, you may notice the system becomes slower and slower. Computer defragmentation can solve many of these problems and can even potentially prevent a complete system crash. For business and home offices, slow computers can create a downturn in productivity, making defragmenting even more of a critical issue.

I’ve tried the Diskeeper for WHS trial and it seems okay, but would really like to try the PerfectDisk software on WHS. Currently use PD on our PCs at work, but I haven’t a clue as to how it’ll do on a bunch of TB drives in WHS. Interested in finding out…give me the chance to.

You should defrag your home server because it allows for more efficient file reading, so it is faster. And everyone wants there home server to be faster, right?

This is a good question But I suppose defragging often does helps lessen the amount of remnant file bits left around on your disk, especially after you’ve fragged a large number of old files and deleted lots of them!

Defragging is always important. It helps to free up lost disk space, as well as better organise file locations for faster reading. This is especially important in a file server scenario, where files are being accessed and moved around all the time.

I cannot win, english is not my native language but I have to say that PerfectDisk is probably the best WHS add-in to date.

SSD support is a clever movement, WHS uses system disk to create “tombstones” (links) to real files, so system will always be as low as the 1st disk’s access time. I’m thinking of getting one for my home server, as they are a good investment in terms of electric consumption and noise (for the disk that will always be working), and it won’t slow down my future HDs.

“Selected Files” is also a must have, there is no need to defrag everything, I know the work I’m doing and I know the files I’ll be using. I can’t figure why nobody think about it before.

And of course, the ability of defrag at boot time the MFT can give our system a boost, they say it can be done without reboot, I have no problem with hibernation file, but touch those protected files scares me. Can we send files to the server while PD is defragmenting the MFT? Have you tested this feature? Is it safe?

If the Bundle has a good price I think I could easily raise the money at home, there are about 10 computers here that will be connected to the server, let’s hope it keeps the 50$ price of 1 WHS PD10′s license.

WHS allows you to collect and replace Media Center content and other files for later streaming. After recording, deleting, and overwriting file space and scattering fragments over the disks, terabytes of files need defragmentation for optimum streaming performance (gotta impress your friends and family). PerfectDisk Windows Home Server Bundle nicely allows individual PCs on the home WHS network to also benefit from defragmenting performance.

By the way, I have used Perfect Disk since last October and an analysis of my drives on all five of my workstations and the WHS show from 98-100% non-fragmentation. Do I know it is helping with system response? Not from any imperical evidence. But I do know from other experiences that other PC’s I have had would slow down as the file structure fragmented. My systems aren’t fragmented so, through logical deduction, I would conclude they are performing faster than they would if PD wasn’t there continually defraging.

I received my upgrade from PD10 to PD11 yesterday. The installation on the WHS went very well. You have to uninstall the add-in for PD10 before running the upgrade to install the PD11 add-in. The only issue I had was in updating my laptops and workstations. After upgrading my two laptops (Win7-premium), PD11 could not resolve the drive paths for the disk drive (C: and D:), displaying an error message. Rebooting the laptop corrected the problem. It did not matter if I upgraded after removing PD10 or upgrading on top of PD10. I tried both ways. The documentation does not mention the need to reboot.

I would be the perfect candidate for this because I do not believe it will help one bit! I have a 14TB WHS setup with many blu-ray and dvd rips. My transfer rates are fine and streaming does not have hiccups. Show me I’m wrong! I would love to install and see if I notice a performance increase.

I’m a little leary of disk defrag programs, but have heard good things about Perfect Disk. I’ve never defraged my WHS drives, so this would be the perfect addition to my WHS, should I win a copy.

Having the ability to also defrag all drives on the WHS network is a great addition. I have 5 computers all on my WHS network that could surely benefit from this feature.

And last, but not least, the mswhs.com web site is a good tool for me. I don’t have a lot of time to look at new add-ins or features, or what’s going on with WHS, but I try to check this site a couple of times a week. There’s always something new here, such as the info on PerfectDisk.

this may not be what you’re looking for re:answer, but I defrag my WHS because I noticed a substancial performance increase when streaming movies when I first installed the perfectdisk trial here at home and defrag’d the server.

I have a large collection of Recorded TV shows, this is in the TB range, each file is very large. I Belive that streaming these recording to my 360 would be a lot painless if they were properly defragmented. PD11 could do this.

Defragging your server makes it run faster. Files that don’t get used as often get lower priority over ones that do. PerfectDisk is great at this.
