I agree. These solutions are inadequate if all they can’t back up the PC backups. That’s the point of the Home Server – it’s already back that stuff up. We now need a way to back up WHS. Now we have to have a back up for WHS and separate backups for each PC WHS. Hard to believe Microsoft completely ignored this issue.

Hi Philip,

I bought one of these for Christmas, and found that it has a glaring hole: I cannot expand the “+” next to the “directories to exclude”, so I can only specify for it to back up a full disk! This makes the solution markedly less functional. This happens on all machines I’ve installed the client part to in my house (desktop and 3 laptops).

Additionally, on Nov. 9 2007, you stated that the external backup “solutions” are all only for the shared folders, and NOT for the backups that we’re doing of our machines. This seems like the focus group lacked participants from the proper perspective, or the issue was not triaged appropriately. Either way, it’s a significant failing in a device that is supposed to make it as simple as possible to preserve your data.

I’ve also found 11 other issues, not all of them as glaringly show-stopping as the above; I have been writing up a Word doc to send in, with screencaps. Who should I send them to?

Hi Jim,
All backup solutions for WHS are the same at only backing up the Shares. That’s both “KeepVault for WHS” and the forth coming “JungleDisk for WHS”.

Based on this post on their support forum, there’s a huge hole with this service – it gives you offsite backup of data on the WHS shares, but *not* of the data that’s backed up from other PC’s…
